Kivan is a Chaotic Good Ranger who can be recruited in BG1. He starts with proficiencies in halberds and long bows, as well as two points in two-weapon style due to being a ranger.

Baldur's Gate 1

Kivan can be found in the High Hedge area from chapter 1 onwards. However, as soon as you recruit him a timer starts on a quest which you must complete, and he will leave permanently if it is not finished on time. Whilst you would have to complete the quest anyway, regardless of whether you recruit Kivan, it is difficult to do so within the time limit set by Kivan. As a result, if you want Kivan in your party it is sensible to complete a few side quests and reach level 3 or 4 before recruiting him.

Once you have recruited him, Kivan makes an excellent archer or melee fighter. If you want him up front, it's a good idea to spend proficiency points in long swords, as enhanced versions of this weapon are easily available, even at the early stages of the game. As well as bonuses from proficiency points, Kivan also has bonuses with long swords due to his race (elven), and with one in each hand he can dish out damage quite quickly.

Siege of Dragonspear

If present, Kivan will leave your party at the end of the introduction to Siege of Dragonspear and cannot be recruited again.

Baldur's Gate 2

Kivan does not appear in Baldur's Gate 2.
